Douglass, Donald PictureThe Rev. Donald D. Douglass, PhD went to be with his Lord on Dec. 1, 2015, following a short illness.

Don was born in Oil City, Pa., in 1919, one of 10 children on a small farm.

His dream to attend college was interrupted by service to his country in World War II. Serving as a medical technician at the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts, he met Alberta and they were married in 1943.

Utilizing the G.I. Bill, Don attended Boston University, earning a Theology Degree and becoming a Methodist minister. While serving at three different churches and starting a family, Don went on to earn a PhD degree in psychology from Boston University.

Don had a long and distinguished career in higher education as a professor and served as an academic dean at Wesley College, Dover, Del.; York College, York, Pa.; and Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro, Ky.

Retiring to Mentor, in 1984, he and Alberta threw themselves into volunteer work as state AARP director, volunteer with the Boy Scouts (Silver Beaver recipient), American Psychological Association and the Lake County Council on Aging.

He and Alberta started the Northeast Chapter of The Friendship Force. They traveled worldwide, leading groups to the Middle East and Europe.

Most important was his love and dedication to his partner, Alberta! Their faith in God sustained them in good and bad times. They grew old together for over 70 years of marriage.

He leaves behind his brother, Art; sons, Donald and Keith; daughters-in-law, Julie and Debbie; granddaughters, Kathie (husband Jim) and Brittany (husband Karim); grandsons, David (wife Jessie), Brandon and Ryan; and, most of all, the precious great-grandchildren, Maxwell, Dexter, Andrew, Charlie and Teddy.
