Benjamin D. Jones

CHARDON – Benjamin D. Jones, of Chardon, passed away Oct. 30, 2015, at his residence. He was 86.

Born July 18, 1929, in Furnace Run, Pa., to Benjamin and Edna Belle (nee Hawk) Jones, he had been a longtime area resident.

Ben served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Ben married Jean Grove, on Dec. 15, 1950, in Homer City, Pa. She preceded him in death on May 11, 2005.

He worked and retired from the GM Coit Road Plant in Cleveland.

Ben was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman. In his younger days he played softball. More recently, he enjoyed playing cornhole at the senior center and against family and friends.

Ben was a member of the Morning Star Friends Church Choir and enjoyed traveling to area nursing homes to sing and entertain the residents.

Survivors include his children, Debbie (Paul) Soltis, of Chardon, Benjamin H. (Denise), of Willowick, Mark (Debbie), of Anchorage, Alaska, and Robin (John) Finley, of Chardon; grandchildren, Brittany (William) Bluhm, of Euclid, Benny Jones, of Willowick, and Danielle (Nate) Walton, of Savannah, Ga., Raquel (Ben) Griffis, of Mayfield Heights, and Renee Prosen, of Marion, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Hailey and Hannah Bluhm; siblings Laverna Reid, Glenavee Jones, Gilbert (Janet) Jones, Barb (Tom) Tuck, Roy (Jo Ann) Jones, Larry (Shirley Mirauntz) Jones, Terry (Kirby) Jones, Bill (Peggy) Jones, Cindy (Richard) Spink and Vernon (Carole) Jones; sister-in-laws, Betty Ann Jones and Elaine Jones; and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and siblings Wendell and Bob Jones.

Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Nov. 3 at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon, with a funeral service following at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 4 at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chester Township.

porozynskiMIDDLEFIELD – Dolores (nee Gorski) Porozynski , of Middlefield, passed away peacefully on Oct. 22, 2015, at Hospice of the Western Reserve. She was 96.

She was the beloved wife of the late Arnold and loving mother of Joyce, Judith Farrell (Dr. Gilbert), Robert (deceased) and William (Sandra).

Dolores will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, Kelly Gay (Kenneth), Dr. Craig Farrell (Linda), Curt Farrell, Nannette, Kirk (Michele), Erik (Katy); step-grandchildren, Katherine Toth, Melisa Wallace (Josh); and great-grandchildren.

She was the dear sister of the following deceased, Dorothy Sielatycki (Theodore) and Norma Blythin (William); and beloved aunt and great aunt.

Private family services were held.

Virginia M. McIntosh

CHARDON – Virginia M. (nee Fix) McIntosh, of Chardon, passed away Oct. 30, 2015, at University Hospitals in Cleveland. She was 74.

Born March 26, 1941, in Cleveland, to Matthew and Thelma (nee Scholleart) Fix, she had been a longtime area resident.

Virginia retired from the Geauga County Department of Human Services.

She enjoyed antiquing, SCUBA, water sports, traveling and sailing. She was very creative and had many artistic talents such as ceramics and drawing.

Virginia was an animal lover, especially her family dogs.

Survivors include her husband of 45 years, David, of Chardon; children, Kim Lorenz, of Chardon, and John McCumber, of Chardon; and granddaughter, Jessica McCumber, of North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Carol Ann Southern.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Nov. 13 at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon, with a memorial service following at 7 p.m. the funeral home.

Eugene Martell

Martell Obit PictureBEDFORD, TX – Eugene Martell, 75, passed away peacefully early Thursday morning Oct. 29, 2015. He went home surrounded by his family.

A Catholic Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, 2015, at St. John The Apostle Catholic Church, Hurst. Visitation: 2-4pm and 6-8pm, with a Rosary at 7:30 pm Thursday, November 5, 2015 at Lucas Funeral Home in Hurst, Texas.

Burial will be in Bourland Cemetery, Keller, Texas.

Gene was born and spent the first half of his life in Ohio. He spent the last half of his life in Texas.

As a young man, Gene was very active in St Helen’s Catholic Church in Newbury Township and spent a great deal of time in his formative years with his friend and mentor Father Moran.

As did many in his generation, Gene joined the Army Reserve in 1962 and served in the Logistics Branch out of the Richmond Road Armory until 1968.

In his midlife, Gene was active in the community in Ohio with the Boy Scouts as Scout Master of Troop 101. After moving to Texas, Gene was very active in Lions Club and Knights of Columbus at St John’s the Apostle Catholic Church.

Gene worked for 15 years at CFL and 15 years at the City of Colleyville. He always kept in touch with this old friends in his retirement years with annual summer trips to Ohio and Vermont to escape the Texas summers.

He spent the other nine months in Texas to escape the memory of the winter of 1977.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father and eldest brother.

He leaves behind his wife, Janice, of 49 years; three sons; his only daughter; 11 grandchildren whom he adored; three brothers; and a sister.

Hobbies included boating and fishing and camping with friends and family.

Annamarie Mezerkor

CHARDON – Annamarie (nee Gaeto) Mezerkor, of Chardon, passed away Nov. 1, 2015, at Chardon Healthcare. She was 67.

Born April 24, 1948, in Cleveland, to Sam A. and Marie H. (nee Karrenbauer) Gaeto, she had been a longtime area resident.

She enjoyed scrapbooking and nature photography, but her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis J., of Chardon; children, Dennis E. (Terri) and Denise (Steve) Kostrab, both of Chardon; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sister, Sandy (Mike) Sefcik, of Macedonia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one great-granddaughter.

Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Nov. 6 at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 7 at the funeral home, with burial to follow at All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township.

Ellen Florence Toothman

Scan_20151105 (2)MANTUA – Ellen Florence Toothman, of Mantua, passed away Nov. 2, 2015, at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center. She was 83.

Ellen was born Dec. 26, 1931, in Fairmont, W. Va.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Paul A. Toothman Sr.; nine children, Paul Jr. (Ann), William (Vicky), Patrick (Edith), Debra, Kenneth, John, Denise, Melba and James; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren, with four more on the way; a brother, two sisters, many nieces, nephews and in-laws; and last, but not least, “Miss Kitty.”

She was predeceased by her parents; a son named Dana; a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter; five brothers; three sisters; and a son-in-law.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Nov. 7 at Faith Baptist Church, 12010 Snow Road (at state Route 44), Newbury Township, where family will visit with friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to services.

Ida P. (nee Liberatore) Spicl died Nov. 4, 2015, at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center, in Munson Township.

Ida was born in West Deer, Pa., to Gaetano and Onorina (nee Salomone) Liberatore on Jan. 22, 1925.

She attended Shaw High School, in Cleveland, class of 1944.

Her first husband, Lloyd Golko, preceded her in death in February 1974. Her second husband, George F. Spicl, preceded her in death February 1992.

Ida was an active member of the Pilgrim Christian Church, where she coordinated the food cupboard for many years, receiving an award from the Geauga Hunger Task Force.

She volunteered for the Chardon Municipal Court. She also received an award as volunteer of the year for her many years of service within the community.

Survivors include daughter, Norina (Alan) Plechaty, of Lakewood, Ohio; son, Rick (Terry-Anne) Golko, of Houston, Texas; grandson, David Zehner; and two great-grandchildren.

Her sister, Louise Salomone, is deceased.

Visitation is 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8, at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

A funeral service will be held at the Pilgrim Christian Church, 202 South Hambden St., southeast corner of Chardon Square, Chardon, on Monday, Nov. 9 at 9 a.m.

Entombment will follow at Knollwood Cemetery, 1678 SOM Center Road, Mayfield Heights.

NEWBURY TWP. – Carol E. (nee Leonard) Wenner, of Newbury Township, died Nov. 6, 2015, at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center in Claridon Township. She was 77.

Born April 16, 1938, in Lewisburg, Pa., to Raymond and Gladys (nee Ocker) Leonard, Carol was raised in Lewisburg, where she graduated High School in 1955.

She has lived in the Northeast Ohio area for 60 years.

When her children were young, she was a 4-H advisor to a Horse and Pony Club of Geauga County.

For many years, she was a volunteer at the former Geauga Community Hospital. She also answered the emergency phone for the Newbury Township Fire Department, before 9-1-1 came to Geauga County.

For the last 30 years, Carol and her daughter, Deborah, have owned and operated Country Arts and Jewelry in Middlefield. She had a talent for color and she enjoyed designing one of a kind and custom jewelry.

She also enjoyed gardening, canning and quilting.

Carol is survived by her husband of 60 years, Gerald Wenner, of Newbury; daughter, Deborah Wenner, of Middlefield; son, Jeffrey (Annemarie) Wenner, of Claridon; granddaughter, Jessica (Gabreil) Diggs, of Canton, and grandson, Gregory Wenner; great-granddaughter, Alyssa Diggs; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; and sister, Jean Fisher, of Lewisburg.

Private family services were held.

Keith Allen Happ

HappKeith Allen Happ, age 58, died on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015.

He was born in Cleveland, on Oct. 7, 1957, to George W. and Joan Rae (nee Martin) Happ.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Beth (nee Lapa) Happ; sons, Christopher and Ian; brothers, George and Kenneth; sister, Pamela; and dear nieces and nephews.

Keith was a four-sport athlete (football, wrestling, baseball, golf) at Chardon High School, where he later served as a wrestling coach. He was a member of the Lake County Community College golf team and, as a competitive amateur golfer, carried a scratch handicap. He finally achieved the illusive hole-in-one in 2013 at Chartiers Country Club in Pittsburgh.

He served the game of golf as superintendent, agronomist and ambassador. He was superintendent for eight years at Legend Lake Golf Club, Chardon, where he earned certified golf course superintendent status.

He graduated summa cum laude from The Ohio State University College of Agriculture in 1992, with a Bachelor of Science degree, completing graduate coursework before joining the United States Golf Association (USGA) as a Greens Section agronomist in the Mid-Atlantic Region, West Chester, Pa., in 1993.

Keith opened a sub-regional office of the USGA Green Section Turf Advisory service in Pittsburgh, in 2000, providing on-site consultation, education and outreach to superintendents and greens committees throughout a four-state area.

He was appointed director of the North Central Region in 2013, continuing his leadership in the restructured Central Region through 2015. He served on the USGA Research Committee, the Musser Foundation Board and was a member of the Board of Directors of the First Tee of Pittsburgh.

First and foremost, Keith was a loving husband to Mary Beth for 32 years and devoted father to Chris and Ian. He passed his love of golf and respect for the game to his sons, Chris and Ian.

His greatest joy was sharing golf and baseball with his sons. He was a patient, intelligent coach, artful batting practice pitcher and positive mentor to them and to their teammates for many years.

This June, Keith proudly became a Chicago Cubs fan, as father to Cubs first-round draft selection, Ian.

A celebration of Keith’s life was held on Monday, Nov. 2 at Scioto Country Club, 2195 Riverside Drive, Upper Arlington, Ohio, from 2-5:30 p.m. (Founders Ballroom).

Rosemarie Nelson

Nelson, RMMARIETTA, GA – Rosemarie Nelson (nee Ritondaro), age 93, formerly of Chester Township and Arlington, Va., passed away Nov. 6, 2015, in Marietta, Ga.

As a young girl, Rosemarie got a job working for the U.S. government in Germany, where she met the love of her life and married Jimmy C. Nelson, from Texas, who preceded her in death in 1967.

While in Arlington, Rosemarie worked in Washington, D.C., at Andrews Airforce Base and Smithsonian Institute, and was a volunteer at the U.S.O.

While in Washington, Rosemarie met many famous people, including President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, and has a beloved photo with them.

She also attended the 1993 Inaugural Ball of President Bill Clinton.

Rosemarie is survived by her brother John (Maggie, deceased) Ritondaro; and many fond nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nick and Rose (nee Mitchko) Ritondaro; and siblings Frieda (Harold) Williamson, Dorothy Darrah, Dick (Ruth) Ritondaro and Mary (Carl) Gunderson.

Family and friends are invited to meet for a graveside service on Friday, Nov. 13 at 11:30 a.m. at Acacia Memorial Park, 1880 SOM Center Road, Mayfield Heights.

Frances J Koller obit photoMIDDLEFIELD – Frances Jean Koller, of Middlefield, passed away Nov. 13, 2015, at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center. She was 83.

She was born Dec. 9, 1931, in Middlefield, to the late Harley David Hall and Alma Hall.

Frances was a lifelong resident of Middlefield and retired from Great Lakes Cheese. She enjoyed playing bingo.

She will be sadly missed by her loving children, Janet Ditmer-Zelenak, of Chester Township, Deborah (Patrick) Sirk, of Auburn Township, and James (Debbie) Koller Jr., of Troy Township; grandchildren, Denette Ditmer, Nicole Zelenak, Wesley Sirk and Katelin Sirk; and brother Harold (Gertrude) Hall, of Middlefield.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Koller Sr., on July 2, 2002; son-in-law, Robert E. Ditmer Jr.; and brothers Ralph and Charles Hall.

A celebration of her life will be held at 8 p.m. Nov. 18 at Russell-Sly Family Funeral Home, 15670 W. High St., Middlefield.

The family will be receiving friends from 6 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Middlefield Cemetery at a later date.

Marilyn Hoffman

LAWRENCEBURG, IN – Marilyn Hoffman, of Lawrenceburg, Ind., died Nov. 13, 2015. She was 81.

Marilyn was born in Cleveland on Sept. 7, 1934, to Harold and Anna (nee Hotovy) Schroeder.

She is survived by her children, Bruce (Lesli) Hoffman, of Lisle, Ill., Brian (Dianne) Hoffman, of Lawrenceburg, and Cheryl (Gary) Kelly, of Haggerstown, Md.; and grandchildren, Mitchell, Dana and Alyse.

Marilyn also leaves her brother, Harold Schroeder, of Houston, Texas.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, George Hoffman.

Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 20 at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

A graveside service will be held at 1:15 p.m. Nov. 20 at Fowler’s Mill Cemetery on Fowler’s Mill Road (just north of Mayfield Road) in Munson Township.

Carl R. Anspach

CAPE CORAL, FL – Carl R. Anspach, of Cape Coral, Fla., and formerly of Chardon, died Nov. 15, 2015, in Port Charlotte, Fla. He was 82.

Born in Toledo, to Charles and Juanita (nee Eberhart) Anspach Carl lived in Chardon for many years before moving to Cape Coral in 2000.

Carl proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, stationed in Okinawa.

He served four years active military and four years in the Air Force Reserves.

He was a member of the Elks Club in Cape Coral, a member of the Whiskey Creek Golf Club, the NRA and the Air Force Association.

Carl was an avid golfer, although his greatest joy was spending time with his family.

He retired in 1994 as the maintenance supervisor for the former Geauga Community Hospital after 32 years.

Survivors include his children, James (Cheryl) Anspach, of Madison, Carla (David) Slater, of North Port, Fla., and Richard (Chris) Anspach, of Mentor-on-the-Lake; and 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert; and beloved wife, Diane, whom he married on June 19, 1954, in 1998.

Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. on Nov. 22 at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 23 at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Whitehaven Cemetery.

Ralph W. Cornett

Cornett, RalphWILLOWICK – Ralph W. Cornett, of Munson Township, formerly of Willowick, died Nov. 21, 2015, at TriPoint Medical Center, Concord Township. He was 90.

Born Feb. 14, 1925, in Grayson County, Virginia, he has lived in the area for more than 50 years.

Ralph proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was the plant superintendent for Chase Brass and Copper Co., in Euclid, for more than 40 years.

He enjoyed golf, bowling and camping with his family.

Ralph is survived by his children, Paul (Bonnie) Taylor, of Madison, Denise (Daniel) Muehlhauser, of Munson Township, and Karl (DeAndra) Ferry, of Houston, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He also leaves brothers Marvin and Charles Ray (Sara) Cornett, both of Maryland.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; a brother; and his wife, Sarah (nee Shipman) Ferry Cornett.

Visitation is 3-6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24 at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon. A memorial service will follow at the funeral home at 6 p.m.

Paul W. Joiner III

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Paul W. Joiner III, of Indianapolis, Ind., and originally from Chardon, died Nov. 19, 2015, at his home. He was 49.

Born March 5, 1966, in Claridon Township, Paul was a 1984 graduate of Chardon High School. He was an avid fitness buff, and enjoyed working out, NASCAR, going to the movies and stock car racing.

He was in sales for Safe Haven Securities, a division of ADT.

Paul is survived by his children, Raquael, of Mishawaka, Ind., and Paul W. Joiner IV, of Tempe, Ariz.; parents, Paul W. (Marlene) Joiner Jr.; and brother, Howard Joiner, of North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Wilma.

The family will receive friends Nov. 27, from 4-7 p.m., at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

A funeral service will be held Nov. 28 at 11 a.m. at The Community of Christ Church, 9017 Chillicothe Road, Kirtland.

NEWBURY TWP. – Beth (nee Farley) Victor, of Newbury Township, died Nov. 22, 2015, at Hospice of the Western Reserve. She was 66.

Born in Chardon on Oct. 8, 1949, to Edgar and Florence (nee Clark) Farley, she was a lifelong area resident.

Beth was an avid collector of antiques, enjoyed cooking for her family and was her husband’s caregiver.

Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Robert Victor; children, Wendy (Martin) Mondello, of Highland Heights, and Eric Victor, of Newbury; grandson, Andrew Mondello; sisters, Lois Blair, of London, Ohio, Linda Farley, of South Russell Village, and Carol (Tim) Yapel, of Munson Township.

John F. Shuman

LEROY TWP. – John F. Shuman, of Leroy Township, died Nov. 24, 2015, at Heather Hill Care Communities. He was 81.

Born April 24, 1934, in Uniontown, Pa., to John and Ann (nee Leeper) Shuman, he has lived in Ohio for over 50 years.

John enjoyed collecting lighthouses and Coca Cola memorabilia.

John proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, earning the Purple Heart.

He retired from Seaway Foods after 35 years.

Survivors include his daughter, Anita (Robert) Flyer; son, Michael (Roberta) Shuman; seven grandchildren; and his former wife, Joannie Layne.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Private family services were held locally. He will be interred in Uniontown at a later date.

MIDDLEFIELD – William “Bill” O. Smith, of Middlefield and formerly of Chardon, died Nov. 23, 2015, at Briar Cliff Manor in Middlefield. He was 84.

He was born on Dec. 26, 1930, to Edwin H. and Anna (nee Laver) Smith, in Greenville, Pa.

William married Lois in Wichita Falls, Texas, on March 6, 1952.

He served in the U.S. Air Force for 22 and a one-half years, retiring as a senior master sergeant. He had directed Air Force bands and choirs in Texas, Japan and Colorado Springs, Colo.

Bill was an active member of the Chardon United Methodist Church in Chardon.

Survivors include his wife, Lois; daughter, Pam (Ric) White, of Chardon; grandchildren, Rick White, of Pigeon Forge, Tenn., and Nathan (Stacey) White, of Huntsburg Township; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and sister, Sue Ann Love.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Rayl, ClaraCHARDON – Clara M. Rayl, of Chardon, died Nov. 23, 2015, at Blossom Hill Care Center in Huntsburg Township. She was 101.

Clara was born in Piqua, Ohio, on Feb. 7, 1914, to Marion and Opal (nee Suppinger) Shaner.

On Oct. 23, 1937, she married Lester B. “Buzz” Rayl, in Winchester, Ind.

Clara was a member of the Pilgrim Christian Church, a Girl Scout leader and a member of TOPS. She also had been very active with the March of Dimes.

Survivors include her son James (Janet) Rayl, of Chardon; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Rayl, of Vacaville, Calif.; son-in-law, Stuart Ginsburg, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; son Tom Rayl; daughter, Cindy Ginsburg; one grandson; and six brothers and two sisters.

Visitation is Sunday, Nov. 29, from 12-3 p.m., with the funeral service at 3 p.m. at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

Interment at Chardon Municipal Cemetery.
