BETHLEHEM, PA – Audrey J. Wolle, age 93, of Bethlehem, Pa., passed away June 10, 2016, at Mapleview Country Villa in Chardon.
Born Nov. 15, 1922, in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, she had been a longtime resident of Bethlehem.
Audrey Jackson met George Torrence Wolle, who was in the U.S. Navy submarine service based in Brisbane during World War II. They were married July 3, 1943.
In the summer of 1944, Audrey traveled to the United States on a military transport ship, taking the three-week journey with other war brides through dangerous waters.
George’s submarine crew received a Presidential Citation for conducting five War Patrols and sinking 13 Japanese ships.
Following the war, George was assigned to the naval base in New London, Conn., where their daughter Karen was born.
Following discharge from the U.S. Navy, Audrey and George moved to his hometown of Bethlehem. They were married for 70 years before his death in August of 2013.
Following the death of her beloved George, Audrey moved to Northeast Ohio to be near family.
She enjoyed traveling, camping and spending time with her family.
Audrey was an avid sports fan and enjoyed following the Philadelphia Flyers, Eagles and Phillies.
Her favorite activity was watching her granddaughters play softball.
Survivors include her daughter, Karen (Rodney) Apple, of Aiken, S.C.; grandchildren, Kathryn (Robert) Francis, of Chardon, Dr. Kimberly (Douglas Kugley) Apple, of Wesley Chapel, Fla., and Kristen (Kevin) Apple-Dunne, of Costa Mesa, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Samuel and William Francis, Brynley Kugley and William and Andrew Dunne.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George T. Wolle; son, George T. Wolle Jr.; and five older siblings, Arthur, Fred, George, James and Beryl.
Graveside services will be held July 26 at 11 a.m. at the Nisky Hill Cemetery in Bethlehem. Please use the entrance located at Linden and Church Streets.
