Millicent K. McClelland

McClelland MillieCHARDON – Millicent “Millie” K. (nee Kuchta) McClelland, of Chardon, died on Jan. 21, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. She was 83.

Born March 9, 1932, in Windsor, Ohio, to Michael and Sophia (nee Sakovich) Kuchta, she was a lifelong area resident, including 47 years in Chardon.

Millie attended Pilgrim Christian Church. She was a lifelong educator, having been first-grade teacher and principal at Maple Elementary School, in Chardon, for 29 years. She retired in 1997.

Millie’s greatest joy was spending time with her family.

She is survived by her children, Daniel (Beverly) McClelland, of Munson Township, Dean (Margi) McClelland, of Hudson, Mary (Tim) Williams, of Chardon, and Ann (Barry) Klein, of Hudson; grandchildren, Daniel (Jenn) McClelland, of Hudson, Kelly (Dan) Slattery, of Burton Township, Andy (Faith) McClelland, of Hambden Township, Meghan (Matt) Vickers, of Willoughby, Bryan (Katie) McClelland, of Denver, Colo., Katie McClelland, of Columbus, John (Chamois) Williams, of Cleveland, Jane Williams, of Columbus, Sarah Williams, of Nashville, Tenn., and Maggie Williams, of Chardon, and Amy, Allison and Michael Zeleznik, of Hudson; great-grandchildren, Kristyn, Tyler, Jack, Will, Cole, Drew, Evan and Kyle; and sisters Ann Youshak, Julie Burton, Eva Pechota and Nellie Millhof.

She was predeceased by her husband, Claire, whom she married July 15, 1950, in Windsor; parents; and siblings Mary Ruzicka, Helen Kellogg, John, Mike and Steve Kuchta.

Visitation is 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016, at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 10:30 a.m. at Pilgrim Christian Church on the south end of Chardon Square, next to the fire station.

Private family burial will be in Chardon Municipal Cemetery.

Mike AdamicBURTON – Michael A. Adamic, age 61, of Burton, passed away at his home Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016.

He was born April 19, 1954, in Chardon, to Joseph and Jeananne (nee Buchanan) Adamic.

Mike was a truck driver for the family business, Adamic Trucking, since the age of 16. He started working as an auto mechanic after he retired from trucking.

He was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church in Newbury Township.

Mike enjoyed spending time with his family and enjoyed watching his son play football, and working on cars.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Karen (nee Swegman) Adamic, who he married on April 24, 1999; mother, Jeananne, of Burton; children, Brandon, Mneatha, Megan, Mike, Tannie, Marisa; sisters, Judy Gais, Robin Swinney; brother Joseph Adamic; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph; and brother Jeffery.

Calling hours will be held from 4-8 p.m. Jan. 27 at Russell-Sly Family Funeral Home, 15670 W. High St, Middlefield, OH 44062.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 28 at St. Helen Catholic Church, 12000 Kinsman Road, Newbury, OH 44065. Burial will follow the mass in Weldon Cemetery in Burton.

CHAGRIN FALLS – JoAnn M. (nee Vaughn) Mesmer, of Chagrin Falls, died Jan. 23, 2016. She was 87.

Born Dec. 17, 1928, in Munson Township, to Waldo and Elsie (nee Fussner) Vaughn, she was a lifelong Geauga County resident.

JoAnn was an avid reader. She enjoyed RV camping and yearly trips to the Outer Banks.

Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends.

She was a 1946 graduate of Chardon High School.

JoAnn is survived by her children, Mark (Laurie) Bevington, of Chardon, Jan (Bob) Horesh, of Newbury Township, Cindy McNally, Wendy Fellenstein and Holly Pagan; grandchildren, Kurt Bevington and Ashley Higginbotham, Travis and Kyle Horesh, David and Brad Fellenstein, Ryan Macfarlane and Jacob Pagan, Shannon McNally; great-grandchildren, Jonathon, Olivia, Cooper and Addison; and sister Louise Grace, of Newark.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin Mesmer; parents; and sister Charlotte Farinacci.

Services will be held at a later date.

Paul Wayne Komandt

Wayn Komandt obit photoPARKMAN TWP. – Fire Chief Paul Wayne Komandt, age 66, of Parkman Township, entered into eternal rest after a valiant fight with leukemia on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016, at University Hospitals Cleveland.

He was born Jan. 26, 1949, in Warren, to the late Albert Junior Komandt and Mary Rebecca (nee McConnell) Komandt-Pitcher.

Wayne graduated from Cardinal High School, in 1967, and served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 11, 1969, to Dec. 10, 1971, as an aerial photo interpreter in support of the Vietnam War. He earned a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and Sharpshooter (M-14).

Wayne attended Kent State University and then worked as a service manager of Polymer Mechanical Corp for 49 years.

He was a member of Parkman Congregational Church and was a past member of the Western Phoenix Masonic Lodge.

Wayne joined the Parkman Township Fire Department on May 3, 1972, as a firefighter and became an EMT in 1985. After rising through the ranks, he was appointed chief in January 1987, serving the township in that capacity for 29 years until his passing.

During his service with the Parkman Fire Department, he was also a member of the Geauga County Firefighters Association, the Geauga County Fire Chiefs Association and the Ohio Fire Chiefs Association.

Chief Komandt was essential in forming the Geauga – Portage Water Shuttle Association.

Besides firefighting, he enjoyed traveling with family and for work, visiting new restaurants, gardening, canning, picking berries, being in the outdoors, watching sci-fi movies and debating politics with his son-in-law and granddaughter.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 46 years, Elizabeth (nee Toplovich), whom he married in 1969; children, Shannon (Michael) Cook, of Lorain, David (Teresa) Komandt, of Rapid City, S.D., Paul “Mike” (Krista) Komandt, of Parkman; grandchildren, Courtney Olivia and Cade Michael Cook, Joey and Connor Komandt; brothers, Albert Dale Komandt, of Parkman, Gerald Gene (Marsha) Komandt, of Vienna, Va.; sister-in-laws Rosemarie (Fred) Ogrinc, of Middlefield, Joyce Charnock, of Hiram; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, James Charnock; and sisters-in-laws Linda Komandt and Judith Lynn Komandt.

Calling hours will be held from 1-3 p.m. and 4-6 p.m., with the service to follow at 6 p.m., on Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, at Parkman Congregational Church, 18265 Madison Road, Parkman.

HAMBDEN TWP. – Clara E. McGregor, of Hambden Township, passed on Jan. 23, 2016.

She was born Nov. 7, 1917, in Cleveland, to Adam and Florence (nee Majeski) Brunsky.

On June 11, 1952, she married Emanuel McGregor in Jamestown, Pa., and was a homemaker.

Clara was a member of the Hambden Congregational Church. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking. She loved animals, working as a volunteer for the Geauga County Humane Society.

She and her husband enjoyed traveling to their winter home in DeBary, Fla.

Survivors include her husband, Emanuel; daughters, Shirley (Kenneth) Safko, of Middlefield, and Diane Roach, of Hambden; grandchildren, Tom (Cindy) Safko, Joseph Safko, Russell (Paula) Safko, Rick Roach, Rebecca Roach and Ryan (Adelys) Safko; great-grandchildren, Shane Safko and Sarah Safko.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Emma “Peggy” Brunsky; and brother, Steve Brunsky.

Visitation is Jan. 30, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., with the funeral service at 12 p.m. at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

Interment will be at the Hambden Township Cemetery.

Glassburner Obit photoBURTON – Thomas C. Glassburner, 82, of Burton, passed away Jan. 25, 2016, at Briar Hill Nursing Home.

He was born Dec. 5, 1933, in Cleveland, to the late Thomas Wm and Clarice (nee Krause) Glassburner.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Linda (nee Reighard); daughter, Sharon (Dale) Decker; son, Thomas George (Wendy) Glassburner; step-sons, William (Staci) Poole Jr. and Steven Poole; grandchildren, Thomas Ryan, Anisa, Billy, Shai, Brice, Alissa, Brennin; great-grandchildren, Ella, Sullivan, Hayden, Wailynn; brother, Timothy (Teresa) Glassburner; and former wife, Christine Glassburner.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Rita Hissa.

Tom graduated from Burton High School, in 1951, and then went to the U.S. Navy. After his discharge, he owned Standard Oil Co. in Russell Township for several years.

He graduated from the police academy and went on to serve as a police officer with Russell and Chester townships for many years.

After retirement in 1999, Tom enjoyed working for H&H Hardware, where he was found in the back room fixing lawn mowers and chain saws. He also worked for multiple businesses in the area, making him known as Mr. Fix It and a workaholic by his family and friends.

When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Tom loved working on and showing his 1967 Mustang.

He was very active with Burton Volunteer Fire Department and was fire chief for several years.

Tom attended St. Helen Catholic Church and was a member of F.O.P.

Calling hours will be held from 3-7 p.m. Jan. 28 at Russell-Sly Family Funeral Home, 15670 W. High St, Middlefield.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 29 at St. Helen Catholic Church, 12060 Kinsman Road, Newbury, OH 44065, with Father Jay McPhillips officiating.

Burial will follow the mass in All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township.

Marie Yahnert obit photoWARREN – Marie Yahnert, 89, of Warren, but spent most her life in Middlefield, passed away Jan. 29, 2016, at Windsor House at Champion.

She was born Aug. 5, 1926, in Tioga, W. Va., to the late George Raymond and Opal (nee Mollahan) McElwain.

Marie enjoyed working on crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, embroidery and baking for her family.

She will be dearly missed by her children, Harold (Celia) Yahnert, of Warren, Deloris (Buddy) Moffit, of Cortland, Cheryl (Ned) Palm, of Tallmadge; grandchildren, Catherine (Don) Brooks, David (Sherry) Yahnert, Kyle (Janelle) Moffit, Lisa (Brad) Messenger; great-grandchildren, Dawn Marie, Thomas Brooks, Diana, Darren Yahnert, Ruby, Rose Moffit; sisters Helen Heath, Doris Madsen, Connie Rein; and sister-in-laws, Thelma Harmotta and Linda McElwain.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard J. Yahnert; son, Richard L. Yahnert; brothers, Paul McElwain, James McElwain; and sister Betty Lou Lowthain.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 2 at Russell-Sly Family Funeral Home, 15670 W. High St., Middlefield, OH 44062. Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m. Pastor Edwin Pollari officiate.

CHARDON – Henry Klatka, 88, of Chardon, passed away Jan. 19, 2016, at Briar Hill Healthcare.

He was born on May 22, 1927, to Stanley and Sophie (nee Jankowski) Klatka.

Henry was a lifelong area resident and owned and operated Klatka Furniture.

Survivors include his sons, David and Jim; daughters, Rita and Bonnie; brother Fred; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah; and siblings Joe, Paul, John, Stanley, Stella, Sarah and Edline.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.


Carol Ann Mausling

Mausling, CarolGENEVA – Carol Ann (nee Whitney) Mausling, age 78, of Geneva, died Jan. 30, 2016, at Blossom Hill Care Center in Huntsburg Township.

Carol was born on Oct. 10, 1937, in Cleveland. She was raised in Montville Township and graduated from Chardon High School, Class of 1955.

Carol married her lifelong sweetheart, Ralph Mausling, in Chardon, on May 25, 1957. Their life together is a remarkable love story. They lived in Montville many years, where they lovingly raised their family, enjoying the experience of attending the sporting events of her children and grandchildren.

Carol was an active member of the Montville Church of Christ, where she enjoyed playing the piano and organ.

Her family includes her best friend and husband of 58 years, Ralph; daughters,

Christine Ann (Patrick) Snyder, of Perry, Cynthia Eileen (Michael) Rutledge, of Lordis, S.C., and Heidi Arlene (Tony) Napoli, of New Lyme, Ohio; sons Thomas William (Kelly) Mausling, of Orwell, and Russell Franz (Lora) Mausling, of Wilmington, Ohio; grandchildren, Anna (Marc) Procopio, Alan Mausling, Dawn Brown, Spencer Mausling, Kevin Snyder, Bianca Snyder, Bethaney (Paul) Vacik, Timothy DeLisle, Adrianna Napoli, Angelea Napoli and Isaiah; great-grandchildren, M.J. Procopio, Abbey Procopio, Landon Jones, Kolton Brown, Carson Beatty; sister, Martha (Dan) Grondin, of Florida; and brother, Theodore (Connie) Stone, of Montville.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Edwina Stone; and son Charles Ralph Mausling.

Carol had worked for the Chardon Telephone Company, the Geauga County Clerk of Courts, Metzenbaum Center, Geauga County Readmobile and Montville Child Care.

Carol was a member of the Geneva Senior Center, where she was in the “Off Our Rockers” band.

She enjoyed pinochle, listening to hymns, playing the piano and watching the Indians and Cavaliers.

The family wishes to thank the Sanctuary of Geneva, Blossom Hill Care Center and Hospice of the Western Reserve for taking such loving care of their dear mother.

Visitation is Feb. 2, from 5-8 p.m., at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 3 at the funeral home. Interment in Montville Cemetery.

Clark, PhilBURTON TWP. – Phillip T. Clark, age 75, of Burton Township passed away Feb. 2, 2016, at Heather Hill Care Communities, in Munson Township.

Born July 3, 1940, in Cleveland, to John L. and Ellen M. (nee Fisher) Clark, he had been a lifelong area resident.

Phil was a member of the Local 18 Operating Engineers and was owner/operator of Vondrasek Auto Salvage in Newbury Township.

He enjoyed fishing, making black walnut chocolate, crocheting and leather work.

Survivors include his daughter, Ellen Clark Krawsczyn, of Burton Township; grandson, Navy Hospital Corpsman Brian Krawsczyn, of North Carolina; and brothers Donald Clark, of Burton Township, Richard (Rosemary) Clark, of Chester Township, and William Clark, of Burton Village.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings Paul and Charles Clark, Rosemary Benkosky and Dorothy Clark.

Visitation is 4-6:30 p.m. Feb. 13 at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon, followed by a funeral service at the funeral home.

Charlene Gibbs PhotoMIDDLEFIELD – Charlene H. Gibbs, 88, a lifelong resident of Middlefield, passed away Feb. 2, 2016, at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center.

She was born on Jan. 25, 1928, in Chagrin Falls, daughter of the late Charles and Lena (nee Hofstetter) Harrington.

She was a press operator at Geauga Industries and also was houseware’s manager at her father’s business, the Middlefield Hardware in Middlefield.

Charlene married Edward M. Gibbs, on May 23, 1948, and was married 49 years before he died in October of 1997.

Charlene was known as the “Avon Lady.” She enjoyed selling Avon for 30 years and would always have holiday Avon sales at her home every year.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Middlefield, the Middlefield Senior Center and loved being on the Middlefield Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary for over 60 years.

She also loved hosting the Anderson Bus Tours.

Charlene never knew a stranger, she always enjoyed talking and visiting with everyone.

She will be missed by her friends and family, including her children Jeffrey (Sue) Gibbs, Jerry (Kathy) Gibbs and Joyce (Carl) Prinkey, all of Middlefield; son-in-law, Rich Adams, of Dresden, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; brother, Richard (Helen) Harrington, of Middlefield; and sister, Barbara Goff, of Burton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward; daughter Judy Adams; grandsons Brian Adams and Ben Gibbs; and great-granddaughter Marissa Fritinger.

Visitation is 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Feb. 5 at Russell-Sly Family Funeral Home, 15670 West High St., Middlefield.

A Celebration of Life will be held 1 p.m. Feb. 6 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Middlefield Cemetery.

Zbigniew M. Przybylski

Zbigniew PrzybylskiHIRAM – Zbigniew M. “Ziggy” Przybylski, 91 years of age, passed away Feb. 3, 2016, in Middlefield.

Born in Warsaw, Poland, on June 18, 1924, he was the son of the late Joseph and Veronica Przybylski. Formerly of Cleveland, he had been a resident of the Hiram area since 1954.

Ziggy had been employed as a machinist, plant protector and steward at White Motor Company in Cleveland, following which he worked for several years as a grounds cleaner for the City of Akron.

Ziggy loved gardening and farming his cows and pigs for many years, and will be remembered for his ability to share his political views with everyone.

He proudly served in the Polish National Alliance before coming to the United States.

On May 30, 1953, he married Angela Przybylski, who preceded him in death on Nov. 2, 2014.

Also preceding was his daughter Joanne Suster, in 1990.

Survivors include his daughters Teresa (James) Sargiovanni Jr., of Mantua, and Marcella (Robert) Kramer, of Parkman Township; and grandchildren, Jimmy, Maria, Antonio, Angela, Sarah and Michael.

Funeral services were held Feb. 6 at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service, in Mantua, at 12 p.m., with visitation from 11 a.m. until service time.

Officiating will be Rev. Edward Stafford of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mantua.

Final resting place will follow at Westlawn Cemetery in Mantua Township.

WINDSOR TWP. – Jennifer Knight, age 30, of Windsor Township, died at home Feb. 5, 2016.

Born Jan. 11, 1986, in Dallas, Texas, to Michael Knight and Patricia (nee Lengel) Knight, she had been a resident of Florida before moving to Windsor 14 years ago.

Survivors include her daughters, Kyndra Smith and Kayliee Knight, of Windsor; parents, Patricia (C.W. Stephens) Knight, of Windsor, and Michael Knight, of Florida; siblings, Christopher and Katherine Knight, of Windsor; maternal grandparents, William (Janice) Lengel, of Windsor; and aunts, Debbie (Michael) Vogt, of Windsor, Gail (Jerry) Yost, of Mentor, Debbie Knight and Karen Knight.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Robert and Lois Knight.

A memorial gathering will be held from 2-5 p.m. Feb. 14 at Paine Funeral Home, 140 E. Main St., Orwell.

Donald L. Sly

Dads Obit PhotoMESOPOTAMIA – Donald L. Sly, 72, of Mesopotamia, passed away unexpectantly, with his family at his side, on Feb. 10, 2016, at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

Don was born June 3, 1943, in Mesopotamia, to the late Jesse and Emma (nee Finch) Sly. He graduated from Bloomfield-Mespo School in 1961.

Don went on to serve in the U.S. Navy, from June 2, 1961, to March 25, 1964. He was a Signalman Third Class and was assigned to the USS Diamond Head and the USS Gyatt. He was asked to join the Navy Blue Jackets singing group during his tour.

Upon his discharge, Don started working for Peerless-Winsmith Inc., in Warren, where he worked for 39 years until his retirement in 2002.

His passion for singing led him to start the band “The Remains.” He was the lead singer and keyboardist.

Don was a township trustee in Mesopotamia for 32 years and was a charter member of the Mesopotamia Volunteer Fire Department. He was active with the Fire Association, working many hours at the OX Roast since its inception.

His sons have memories of him coaching both of them in Little League.

Don enjoyed golfing, bird watching, traveling and growing his favorite tomatoes called the “Egyptian.”

His greatest love of all was spending time with his family and dancing with his grandchildren to the music of the “Barenaked Ladies” and the soundtrack to “Evita.”

He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 47 years, Judy (Jackson) Sly; sons, Donald (Mary Kay) Sly II and Justin (Kelli) Sly; brother Edwin (Janet) Sly; sister Norma Sly; grandchildren, Jacob, Kaileigh, Meagan and Benjamin Sly, Kristen (Adam) Clausen, Nicholas (Ashley) Barbieri, Kati (Josh) Davis; great-grandchildren, Riley, Maddy, Emerson, Nicholas and Maggie, and one on the way.

He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Don was preceded in death by his brothers Dale and Jesse; and sisters Mary Ellen Jones, Beatrice Hatch, and Betty Kazsuk.

Calling hours are Feb. 15, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., at Russell-Sly Family Funeral Home, 15670 W. High St., Middlefield.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 16. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Mesopotamia.

Robert W. Rasmussen

NEWBURY TWP. – Robert Rasmussen, of Newbury Township, passed away Feb 10, 2016.

He was born in Cleveland, on Jan. 6, 1948, to Hazel Rasmussen and the late Robert G. Rasmussen.

Bob was a long-time resident of Geauga County. He spent his youth in Newbury, eight years in Burton Township and then the last 37 years in South Newbury.

He loved designing plastic molding equipment and worked for Newbury Industries and Van Dorn Demag for almost 20 years.

Later, he worked for 10 fun years for Peter Becker (the best boss in the world) as an estimating engineer at Robeck Fluid Power Company, in Aurora, and retired with regret.

Bob enjoyed watching auto racing and he loved cars in general. He excelled at assembling model car and airplane kits.   He loved watching football games and the Cavs. And, he loved to travel with his wife.

He worked on Sudoku puzzles, especially while socializing at the end of the bar of Unc’s Patio in Aurora Township.

Bob is survived by his wife of 43 years, Barbara; mother, Hazel; sister, Sue; nieces, Sarah (Burt) and Susie (Mike); and great nieces.

Bob was a caring husband, son and uncle. He will be greatly missed.

Contributions may be made in Bob’s memory to the Newbury Volunteer Fire Department.

Mass of Christian Burial in memory of Bob will take place at a later date.

Kathleen Ethel Robinson

K Robinson obit photoKathleen Ethel (nee Farley) Robinson, 96, formerly of Parkman Township, passed away Feb. 12, 2016, at her daughter’s home in Conneaut.

Kathleen was born Dec. 6, 1919, at her home in Parkman to the late George and Elsie (nee Adams) Farley.

She was first employed at Al George’s store in Parkman. During World War II, she worked for Polson Rubber Co. and later she worked as an office worker for Johnson Rubber Co. She was the head teller for Middlefield Banking Co., where she retired in 1985.

Kathleen was affiliated with Parkman Congregational Church and the former Order of Eastern Star chapter in Parkman.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and baking.

She will be sadly missed by her children, Evelyn (Richard) Boeson, of Conneaut, and Tom (Linda) Robinson, of Bend, Ore.; grandchildren, Jason Boeson, of Birmingham, Mich., and Justin Robinson, of Portland, ore.; and great-grandchildren, Griffin, Luke and Owen Boeson, and their mother, MaryBeth, of Birmingham, Mich.

Also surviving her is her sister-in-law, Evelyn Farley, of Valparaiso, Ind.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Hilton Farley, in 1993.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 16 at Russell-Sly Family Funeral Home, 15670 W. High St., Middlefield. Calling hours will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Pastor Joyce Morrison and Pastor Rod Edwards will be officiating the service.

Burial will be in Overlook Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the staff and nurses with the Hospice of Western Reserve for their care and compassion with taking care of Kathleen.

NEWBURY TWP. – Paul E. Wilkes, age 80, of Newbury Township, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Feb. 15, 2016, at Holly Hill Nursing Home.

Born April 30, 1935, in Red House, W. Va., to John A. and Mildred E. (nee Stewart) Wilkes, he had been a 50-plus-year Newbury resident.

Paul served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.

Ever an entrepreneur, Paul started Able Tree Service, Hi-Lite Maintenance Inc., The Flag Store and Claridon Barns. He enjoyed working and was always busy.

Paul attended Grace Evangelical Bible Church, in Newbury, with his wife.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Sandra (nee Newsom) Wilkes, of Newbury; children, David (Tammy) Wilkes, of Newbury, and Mona (Rick) Oetting, of Purlear, N.C.; grandchildren, Brandon Wilkes, of Bryan, Ohio, Shawn Wilkes (deceased), of Newbury, David P. Wilkes Jr., of Newbury, and Caitlin (Clinton) Rose, of Orwell; great-granddaughter, Carmen Ella Rose, of Orwell; and brother Gary (Brenda) Wilkes, of Middlefield.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers John and James Wilkes.

There will be a private burial at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery per Paul’s request.

MIDDLEFIELD – Geneva A. McCabe, age 92, died Feb. 14, 2016, at Briar Cliff Manor in Middlefield.

Born Oct. 7, 1923, in Middleport, Ohio, to George and Lena M. (nee Barnett) Abbott, she was a resident of Chardon for 34 years, having previously lived in Thompson Township, Middlefield and Cleveland.

Geneva retired from Geauga County Human Services, after being employed for 20 years. She efficiently supervised the clerical staff.

She was a Navy veteran in World War II in the WAVES.

Geneva is survived by her children, Karen (Mike) Dillworth, of Thompson, Jerry (Janet) Vogt, of Fowler, Ohio, Michael (Debbie) Vogt, of Windsor, and Gorden Vogt, of Chardon; seven grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 20 at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

Interment will follow at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens, 11521 Chillicothe Road, Chesterland, OH 44026.

Martin “Tack” Malise Sr.

CHARDON – Martin “Tack” Malise Sr., age 81, of Chardon, passed away Feb. 16, 2016, at David Simpson Hospice House in Euclid.

Born April 10, 1934, in Commodore, Pa., to John Malise Sr. and Susan (nee Harchuck) Malise, he had been a longtime area resident.

Tack served in the Army National Guard prior to becoming a carpenter and member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local #373.

He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and gardening, and will be remembered for his garlic.

He made sausage, sauerkraut and cured his own meat.

Tack enjoyed playing bass guitar, performing with his good friend Rudy Kershishnik and the Cleveland Lake Erie Button Box Club.

He was a member of and served as an usher at St. Mary Catholic Church in Chardon.

Tack will be remembered as being willing to help all.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Barbara (nee Metz) Malise, of Chardon; children, Daniel, of Olmsted Falls, Andrew, of Mentor, Karen Pike, of Chardon, Jim (Donna), of Painesville, and Suzie (Jack) Cosgriff, of Mentor; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; siblings Adam (June), of Eastlake, John (Delores), of Euclid, Mary Miller, of Albion, Pa., Jim (Karen), of Cleveland, Anna Pecek, of Brooklyn, Ohio, and Carol McKinney, of Cleveland; and many extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Martin “Marty” Malise Jr.; and siblings Joseph, Raymond, Margaret Griffith and Martha Valesky.

Visitation is 10:30-11:30 a.m. Feb. 22 at the Church of St. Mary, 401 North St., Chardon, with a funeral Mass following at 11:30 a.m.

Burial will take place at All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township at a later date.

Michael Lewis Rear

HAMBDEN TWP. – Michael Lewis Rear, age 33, of Hambden Township, died suddenly Friday, Feb. 19, 2016.

Born April 8, 1982, in Claridon Township, to Blake and Joyce (nee Lewis) Rear, he was a lifelong Chardon area resident.

Michael was a 2000 graduate of Chardon High School and a 2004 graduate of The Ohio State University. He was a project coordinator for The Millstone Management Group in Gates Mills.

Michael was the treasurer of the Geauga County Maple Festival Board, he coordinated the SAP Run and officiated high school and youth football, basketball and baseball.

He was an avid golfer and a proud alumni of The Ohio State University.

Survivors include his parents, of Hambden; brother, David Rear, of Hambden; uncle, Hugh Rear, of Hambden; aunt, Roberta (Roger) Durham, of Burton; and many other aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25 at the Church of St. Mary, 401 North St., Chardon. Burial will immediately follow at Hambden Cemetery.
