Agnes Mary (nee Kamenca) Weikart, age 91, passed away the early evening of Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2023, at Burton Health Care Center, Burton.
She was born Sept. 5, 1932, on Ophelia Avenue in Newton Falls, Trumbull County. She was the daughter of John and Mary (nee Lajcak) Kamenca, who had immigrated from Czechoslovakia.
The family relocated to Cleveland when she was a young girl for her father’s work in the steel mills. At only 8 years of age, Agnes lost her mother suddenly. This was a devastating event in her life.
Agnes excelled in school and was valedictorian at Thomas Jefferson Junior High and an honor student at Lincoln High School. She secured office employment at Fulton and Goss in downtown Cleveland through her dear friend Ann. This was a dream job for her, but she eventually left, once married, making the sacrifice to raise her two children.
She married Fred Weikart on Feb. 23, 1957, and settled in Burton. As a young family, there were many camping trips, especially to the KOA Campground in Geneva.
In the 1970s, Agnes and Fred owned and operated The Switching Post Restaurant in Windsor. The whole family worked there, and many memories were made.
She loved to entertain at her home and for several years pig roasts were held which were memorable!
Agnes loved the history of fashion and traveled with a group from Kent State in Burton to Paris.
Agnes and Fred went to many places. This included an eight-country European trip, Canada, Aruba, and many trips in the states.
Agnes was a member of St. Lucy Church in Middlefield. She enjoyed The Burton Library immensely and was an avid reader her whole life. In her later years, besides reading, her joy was watching her grandchildren grow up and become successful adults and parents.
Agnes is survived by her husband of 66 years, Fred; a daughter, Andrea Hampton, and her husband, Douglas, of Cortland; a son, Eric Weikart, and his wife, Kim, of Burton; and four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, John Jr., Joseph and Michael; as well as a baby sister, Margaret, who passed at the age of 1 month.
A private family service was held at Welton Cemetery in Burton.
Arrangements made by Burr Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Chardon. Information and condolences online at www.burrservice.com.
