Lola Ellen Underwood

CHARDON – Lola Ellen Underwood (nee Anderson), age 92, a resident of Chardon, died July 2, 2018, at Chardon Healthcare in Chardon.

She was born May 27, 1926, in Wheeler, W. Va., to Floyd and Bessie (nee Lough) Anderson. In 2015, she moved to Chardon from Fairmont, W. Va., following the death of her husband.

She was a caring homemaker and volunteered at Penny Pincher Thrift Shop, and Bauer Lumber Company during the springtime, helping with the houseplant sales.

She loved caring for her vegetable garden and was a dedicated fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers and Penguins, and loved watching NASCAR.

She is survived by her children, Freddie M. (Linda Mary) Underwood Jr., of Harmony, Maine, Ellen Elaine Savage, of Hambden Township, and Deana Underwood, of Hambden; sister Janet Noponen, of Painesville; grandson Joseph Underwood; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Freddie Melvin Underwood Sr.; sister Pauline Underwood; and grandson Freddie M. Underwood III.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Grandview Memorial Park & Mausoleum, 93 Grandview Cemetery Road, Fairmont, W. Va.

Carol J. Sellers Neill

BURTON – Carol J. Sellers Neill, age 76, lifelong resident of Burton, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2018, at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center.

Born on Dec. 14, 1941, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Marion (nee Snyder) Sellers. She was a graduate of Burton High School in 1959.

Carol married Donald Neill on Oct. 27, 1962. They were married 50 years before he passed away June 30, 2013. They are “together again.”

Carol was a member of DTJ Taborville District Council and enjoyed going to their duck dinner events. She loved collecting Elvis and Lighthouse memorabilia. Her family and friends will miss her dearly.

Carol is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Wilson; and nine grandchildren, Mack Neill, Molly Neill, Dylan Mierzejewski, Hannah Mierzejewski, Jeffrey Wilson, Jacob Wilson, Caden Neill, Caitlin Neill and William Wilson. She is also survived by her nephew, Mark Sellers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; parents; and two brothers, Donald Sellers, who died in 2014, and Dennis Sellers, who died in 1996.

Per her wishes, cremation will take place and no services will be held.

MUNSON TWP. – Thomas R. Starr, age 79, of Munson Township, died unexpectedly on July 12, 2018.

Born July 27, 1938, in Blainesburg, Pa., he had been a Geauga County resident for more than 60 years.

Tom proudly served in the U.S. Army.

He was the plant supervisor for J&L Steel for 40 years before his retirement.

He loved to camp, was an avid trap shooter and he enjoyed fishing, playing cards and gambling.

Tom served as a trustee at the Pilgrim Christian Church and was a member of Aerie Eagles 2261 and American Legion Post 459.

Survivors include his loving companion, Helen Wilson, of Munson; brother, William (Dee) Brewer, of Lake Wales, Fla.; sister-in-law, Sandra Hritz, of Brownsville, Pa.; niece, Chelle (Raymond) Adams; great-nephews, Aaron John and Noah Thomas, of Morgantown, W. Va.; and nephew, John Hritz, of Morgantown, W. Va.

He was “Beloved Papa Tom” to Evianna and Grayson Ulrich, children of Dawn (Chris) Ulrich and Justin, and Tyler, children of Steve (Ann) Wilson.

He also leaves his faithful best friend, Shadow Dog.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Myra Jean (nee Kurtz) Starr.

The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Friday, July 20 at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon, followed by the funeral service at 6 p.m.

Burial will be Saturday, July 21 at 12 p.m. at Acklin Cemetery in Brownsville, Pa., with Military Honors.

Joan F. Shaw Komar

MIDDLEFIELD – Joan F. (nee Kobylak) Shaw Komar, age 76, of Middlefield, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2018, at Blossom Hill Care Center.

She was born on Aug. 18, 1941, in Cleveland, daughter of the late Frank and Mary (nee Bollo) Kobylak. She was a 1959 John Adams High School graduate and received an associate’s degree in accounting and business management.

She was a secretary, a pharmaceutical assistant and former owner of the Yankee Lady Bed and Breakfast in Middlefield.

She was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church, volunteered at St. Vincent De Paul Soup Kitchen and loved making cards and jewelry.

Joan is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Sam) Tuttle; stepdaughter, Judi (Mike) Kustra; stepsons, David Shaw, Dwayne Shaw, Jeffrey (Donna) Komar, Jonathan (Penny) Komar, Kevin (Shari) Komar, Kenneth (Michelle) Komar; and 18 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Norman Shaw, in 1993; and her second husband, Kenneth Komar, in 2009.

A Memorial Mass will be held 10 a.m. Friday, July 20, 2018, at St. Edward Catholic Church, 16150 Center St., in Parkman Township.

Jean Penter

MUNSON TWP. – Jean Penter (nee Stolarski), age 99, of Munson Township, died July 14, 2018, at the Gables of Kentridge, in Kent, after a short illness.

Born in Cleveland on Oct. 12, 1918, she was a lifelong area resident.

She volunteered at Geauga Community Hospital for 25 years, was an active member of the Munson Twigs and a member of the Polish Club.

The Penters were very community oriented and charitable.

Jean was an avid reader but her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Judy (Larry) Wilson, of California; son, James Penter, of Kent; grandchildren, Bradley (Kris) Wilson, Zachary (Piper) Wilson, Abby Birk and Ian (Rosemary) Penter; and great-grandchildren, Ryan and Reed Wilson, Chase and Elly Birk, and Indigo Penter.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Clement Penter, in 1993.

The family will receive relatives and friends July 19, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

The burial will be at 10 a.m. July 20 at All Souls Cemetery (meet at the front gate).

Thomas J. McNulty, age 77, formerly from Chardon, passed into God’s arms at his home in Odessa, Fla., on July 5, 2018.

Tom leaves behind his loving wife, Jerilynn (nee Cattren); and devoted daughters, Lisa Nelson (Daniel) and Mary Ellen Zeiger (Steven).

He was the dearest grandfather to Patrick McNulty (Meredith), Meagan Zeiger, Aaron Nelson, Dillon Zeiger, Sean Nelson, Ethan Zeiger, and Olivia Zeiger; loving great-grandfather to Jack and Ava McNulty; dearest brother of William McNulty (Ruth) and Kathleen McKeever (Jerome); loving uncle to many; and dearest brother-in-law to Nancy McNulty (Jack).

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary McNulty; sisters Patricia Ann and Mary; and brother Jack.

Tom was a U.S. Army veteran.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on July 10, 2018, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 12708 N. Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa, Fla., at 10 a.m., with visitation at 9 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church.

Robert E. Reynolds

Robert E. Reynolds, age 87, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2018, in Chardon.

Born in Lyndhurst, Robert grew up in Munson Township. He later lived in Tavares, Fla., from 1956-1997, and upon returning to Ohio resided in Russell Township.

He was employed by Metzenbaum Sheltered Industries in Chester Township.

Robert is survived by his very special sister-in-law, Marian Lalich, of Chardon; nieces, Patricia (Paul, deceased) Reid, of Clermont, Fla., and Cindy Reynolds, of Cleveland; and nephew, Donald (Paige) Reynolds, of Acworth, Ga.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmore and Leona (nee Arnold) Reynolds; and brother, Carl L. Reynolds.

Private interment in Tavares, Fla.

Ilse Louise Grimm

CHARDON – Ilse Louise Grimm, age 76, of Chardon, passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, July 22, 2018.

She was born Dec. 15, 1941, in Germany, to Elsa and Hermann Friedauer.

Ilse married Dieter Grimm on Feb. 3, 1962. They celebrated 56 years of marriage before her passing.

Her love for her family was unconditional and a beautiful example to the living.

Ilse is survived by her husband, Dieter Grimm, of Chardon; children, Ralph (Jackie Cackowski) Grimm, of Chardon, Tanja (David) Rust, of Chagrin Falls, and Cindy (Bob) Perry, of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren, Brighton (Sierra) Rust, Kyle Grimm, Mark Rust, Michael Rust, Hunter Perry, Stephen Rust and Rachel Perry; sister Doris Hugershoff; and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her sister Helga Curtiss; and brother-in-law, Peter Hugershoff.

Ilse was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints, in Chardon.

She loved cooking and sewing. Most of all she loved spending time with her family and her friends.

It is with much appreciation that Crossroads provided hospice care allowing Ilse to remain home and spend her final days with her family continuously by her side.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 25, 2018, from 9:30-10:30 a.m., at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 12455 Merritt Drive, Munson Township, with the funeral service at 10:30 a.m.

Following the service will be the Interment at the Chardon Municipal Cemetery.

Robert J. Farmwald

BURTON – Robert “Bob” J. Farmwald, of Burton, age 81, passed away peacefully in his home on July 21, 2018, after a long battle with cancer.

He was born to John and Sarah Farmwald, of Middlefield, on June 1, 1937.

Robert was married to Mary Schmucker Farmwald for 61 years.

He served in the United States Army from 1958-1960. He worked at Lincoln Electric, in Euclid, for 26 years.

He served his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ faithfully for 56 years at Huntsburg Baptist Church and often said throughout his illness that he was ready to go to heaven to be with Jesus.

He enjoyed sports of all kinds; he was a big Indians, Browns and Cavs fan. He loved to fish, golf, play baseball, travel, play Rook and spend time with his family.

Robert is survived by his wife, Mary; six children, Patricia (Edward) Marchiny, Sandra (Bryan) Wunsche, Janice (Thomas) Farmer, Marilyn (Kip) Green, Robert, and Heather (Dave) Fisher.

He was blessed with eight grandchildren, Anthony Marchiny, Stephanie Green, Aaron Marchiny, Jacob Green, Caleb Green, Fiona Fisher, Hannah Marchiny and Simon Fisher.

He is also survived by his sisters Betty Spencer, of Hopedale, Ohio, Catherine Byler, of Sarasota, Fla., and Sally Miller, of Southington; brother James Farmwald, of Huntsburg Township; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Sarah Farmwald; brothers Daniel and Johnny Farmwald; and sisters Loma Siples and Marian Farmwald.

Calling hours will be 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2018, at Russell-Sly Funeral Home, 15670 West High St., Middlefield.

A Celebration of Life will be held 11:30 a.m. July 27 at Huntsburg Baptist Church, 16401 Mayfield Road.

Nicholas R. Presley

CHARDON – Nicholas R. Presley, age 49, of Chardon, passed away July 22, 2018, with his family at his side.

He was born in Painesville on Dec. 18, 1968.

Nick loved to be outdoors. He would frequently take walks in the woods, loved hunting and used to love riding dirt bikes when he was younger.

Nick had always been talented working with anything mechanical and made a living with that talent.

The memories of Nick will forever be remembered by all of those who knew him.

Nick is survived by his parents, Walter and Patricia Presley; his sister, Desiree (Geoffrey) Stalker; his nephews, Dustin and Darryl; his grandmother Mary L. Miller; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Dale A. Garlock

CHESTER TWP. – Dale A. Garlock, age 86, passed away July 22, 2018, at his residence in Chester Township.
He was born Oct. 6, 1931, in Lorain. He had resided in Chester for over 30 years.

Dale was an extraordinary person. Graduating in 1951 from Willoughby Union High, he joined the U.S. Navy Submarines. During the Korean Conflict, his boat, the USS Seafox, trolled the waters of the North Pacific, including under the Polar Ice Cap. Being an expert diver, he later became a member of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team.

Dale was a 33rd Degree Mason and a member of the Ohio Valley Scottish Rite.

His many hobbies included skating, windsurfing, biking, skiing, snowboarding and his beloved Harley-Davidson.

Dale was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 38. His specialty was climbing. He worked on many steel mills and bridges in Cleveland. His fondest memories were with the Neon Sign Company early in his career.

Dale was a member of National Ski Patrol at Alpine Valley for over 45 years, where he also taught snowboarding at the ski school. He was very proud of being an 84-year-old instructor.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara (nee Conkle) Keim; children, Darrell (Connie) Garlock, Jeannine (Patricia Blaskovic) Bonsignore, Gregg (Susan) Garlock, David (Jama) Keim, Brenda (Bob) Patete and Kristine (Shawn) Wilson; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and siblings, Keith (Becky), Ronnie (Brenda) and Glenda O’Bell.

Visitation will be held Saturday, July 28, 2018, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Gattozzi and Son Funeral Home, 12524 Chillicothe Road, Chester. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Eleanor Marie McDonald

MONTVILLE TWP. – Eleanor Marie McDonald (nee Hammel), age 95, of Montville Township, died July 24, 2018, at Blossom Hill Care Center in Huntsburg Township.

Born April 16, 1923, in Maryland, to William Jacob and Bertha (nee Thompson) Hammel, she was a longtime resident Montville.

Eleanor worked for Dr. Eldredge as a dental assistant for many years and retired from Geauga Community Hospital (now University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center) as a floor secretary.

After her retirement, she spent many hours helping out at Montville Country Store.

She was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, in Thompson Township, and was a member of the “study club,” a group of local women who met for many years for faith and friendship.

Family and home were the most important things to Eleanor. She was happiest planning for and enjoying holidays and family get-togethers, where she always made sure to prepare family member’s favorite dishes.

Her family has fond memories of Easter Egg Hunts, Christmas parties, Thanksgiving feasts and many summer picnics in the backyard.

She never missed sending a birthday card, and when possible, provided the birthday person with their favorite baked goods. She will be greatly missed by her family.

Eleanor is survived by her children John C. (Sarah) McDonald III, of Montville, Ann McDonald, of Montville, Melissa (Mike) Carrabine, of Chardon, and Mike (Anna) McDonald, of Thompson.

Eleanor enjoyed and was proud of her 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John C. “Jack” McDonald, whom she married July 15, 1939, and passed away on May 20, 1984; daughter Susan Love; sisters, Helena Lightel and Lillian Foreman; and brother, William Hammel.

Peery Vass Elswick

BLOOMINGTON – Peery Vass Elswick, age 87, passed away Thursday, July 26, 2018, at his residence.

Born April 30, 1931, in Bluefield, W. Va., he was the son of the late Peery Brittain Elswick and Ethel (nee Bailey) Elswick.

Peery was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in the Korean War.

He graduated from Ohio University, earning a B.A. in Art Education and an M.A. in Guidance and Counseling.

He spent 30 years employed by the Fort Frye Board of Education as an art teacher, and later as a guidance counselor for the district in Beverly, Ohio.

He also coached men’s cross country and assisted with other sports, as well as announcing home sporting events, including football and track and field.

He also photo-documented school events for annual school yearbooks and the Marietta Times in Ohio.

After retiring, he continued to work in art education as the Curator Education for Parkersburg (WV) Art Center, and taught part-time art and art history courses at Ohio Valley University and West Virginia University Parkersburg.

Peery was an avid lover of the outdoors, and spent many enjoyable hours fishing, canoeing and gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rita M. (nee Modesitt) Elswick; daughter, Erika R. Elswick (Joseph Radovsky), of Bloomington; son, Lawrence B. Elswick (Carmen), of Chardon; and grandchildren, Brittain and Nicholas, both of Columbus, Ohio, and Madeleine, of Chardon.

Catherine H. Heiden

CONCORD TWP. – Catherine H. Heiden, age 85, of Concord Townhip, formerly a 61-year resident of Clark Road in Chardon Township, died on Sunday, July 29, 2018.

She was born in Painesville, on June 10, 1933, to Otto and Margaret (nee Delventhol) Schaefer and was a graduate of Harvey High School.

She married Glenn Heiden, on May 14, 1955, in Painesville.

Cathy was Deputy Recorder for Geauga County prior to being elected as Recorder and serving from 1988 until 2000. She had also worked for City Loan and transported deaf children to school.

Sewing, vegetable gardening, baking pies, attending all sporting events of her grandchildren as well as being a long-time member of the Zion Lutheran Church were just some of her enjoyments in life.

Survivors include her daughters, Anne Marie Brazis, of Rome, Ohio, and Donna Lee (Carl) Schoenig, of Leroy Township; sons, Raymond (Jennifer) Heiden, of Concord, and Michael (Maryann) Heiden, of Sunbury, Ohio; grandchildren, Maggine (Matt) Fuentes, Brandon (Aubrey) Brazis, Amanda (Tyler) Warwick, Nicholas (Molly) Heiden, Matthew (Sidney) Heiden, and Emma Schoenig; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Maitland and Maddox; and sister Edna Henry, of Lago Vista, Texas.

She also is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Cathy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn, on June 8, 2009; sisters Eleanor Bauer and Ruth Seitz; and brother, Victor Schaefer.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 11, 2018, at Zion Lutheran Church, 508 Mentor Ave., Painesville, with a Memorial Service following at 1 p.m.

BURTON VLG. – John Wesley Dull Sr., age 82, of Burton Village, died Aug. 1, 2018, at Maple View Country Villa, Chardon.

He was born in Johnstown, Pa., on June 23, 1936, to Forrest and Florence (nee Uncapher) Dull.

He had been employed as a hydraulic pipefitter for the Motch and Merryweather Company in Cleveland.

John enjoyed vegetable gardening and working.

He is survived by his children, David, of Chardon Township, Connie (Robert) Williams, of Madison, Donna Milligan, of Flowery Branch, Ga., Tom, of Chardon Township, and Todd, of Hambden Township; numerous grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; four brothers; longtime companion, Linda Sherman, of Chester Township; and former wife, Pearl Dull.

He was preceded by his son John Wesley Dull Jr.; an infant grandson; and two brothers and one sister.

James Ralph Creedon

PAINESVILLE – James Ralph Creedon, born June 24, 1953, in Painesville, passed away July 31, 2018.

Jim was named to honor his two grandfathers: James Harriger and Ralph Creedon. Throughout his life, Jim was an independent, outdoor spirit, who loved animals and nature. He rescued dogs and fed any wild animal that stopped by when he lived in Rock Creek.

He is survived by his sisters, Pam Creedon, who resides in Iowa, Barb Morris, who resides in New York; and his partner throughout his life, Tina Creedon.

His ashes will be laid to rest with his parents, James A. and Louise H. Creedon, in Mentor Cemetery.

He was a lifetime contributor and donor to the Geauga Humane Society’s Rescue Village in Russell Township.

David William Grenier

David William Grenier, age 83, passed away peacefully July 31, 2018, in Newbury Township. Born Dec. 17, 1934, in Huntington, Ind., he resided with his family in Chester Township for 48 years.

David was a U.S. Army Veteran and a member of the Kiwanis Club of West Geauga for 46 years. He was an avid antique car fan, owning one for several years. He was also a longtime meal deliverer with Meals on Wheels.

David was an Engineer with White Motors in Cleveland, and after their closure became a recruiter with Sanford Rose Associates.

Survivors include his wife, Jean (nee Millard); son David R. (Tamara L.); and grandchildren, David E. and Andrew D. Grenier.

David’s son Robert W. is deceased.

The family will receive friends from 12-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018, at Gattozzi and Son Funeral Home, 12524 Chillicothe Road, Chester, where services will follow at 2 p.m.

CHARDON – Rosalie Robichaud, age 77, passed away at her home on Aug. 5, 2018. She was born in Cleveland, on Nov. 5, 1940, to Anthony and Nancy (nee Natale) Principe.

Rosalie married Delbert Robichaud in 1969. She made Chardon her home since 1978 and was very involved in the community.

Rosalie was the Administrative Assistant to the Geauga County Commissioners and worked for many years in the Geauga County Tourism Office.

She was a stay at home mother who volunteered much of her time to St. Mary Church.

She is survived by her son, Christopher Robichaud, of Cambridge, Mass.; brothers Len (Diane) Principe, of North Olmsted, and Roger (Laurie) Principe, of Painesville; sister-in-law, Lucy Principe, of Concord Township; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Delbert J. Robichaud; and brother Dennis Principe.

The family will receive friends Thursday, August 9, 2018, from 5-8 p.m. at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 10, 2018, at the Church of St. Mary, 401 North St., Chardon. Interment will follow at All Souls Cemetery, 10366 Chardon Road, Chardon Township.

BURTON TWP. – Richard “Dick” Bahnick, 78, of Burton Township, died at home on Aug. 3, 2018, after a 14-month battle with cancer. He remained upbeat and positive throughout.

He was born June 27, 1940, on the family farm where he remained his entire life. He was part owner of the family business Geauga Tractor Sales in Burton.

His hobbies were landscaping his property at his home in Burton Township and restoring and showing classic cars. His love and talent for restoring cars showed up in the several hundred trophies and awards that he was so proud of.

He also loved spending the winters at his second home in Florida, where he also showed his “63” Chevy Nova.

Richard is survived by his wife and constant companion of 40 years, Leanne (Pealer); son, Ken (Wendy) Bahnick, of Lewis Center, Ohio; daughter, Connie (Karl) Smith, of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren, Noah and Alyssa Bahnick, and Brooke and Alan Smith; adopted son, Kevin Suszynski, of Burton; nephew, Steven Backiel, of Painesville; and many close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Alice (nee Osmond) Bahnick; and brother, Rod Bahnick.

Calling hours are 12-4 p.m. and 5-8 p.m., with a Celebration of Life at 8 p.m., on Friday, Aug. 10, 2018, at Russell-Sly Family Funeral Home, 15670 West High St., Middlefield.

A Graveside Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Burton Township. Friends may dress casually at Dick’s request.
