Dr. Susan Duppstadt passed away on Feb. 23, 2019, after a long illness. She was surrounded by family.
Susan is survived by her husband, Dr. Roger Sparhawk; sons, Tom and William; sister, Carolyn Brown (Eric); brother, Nile; five nephews; and many extended family who loved her dearly.
Susan received her undergraduate degree from Mt. Holyoke College and her M.D. from Case Western Reserve University. She was a beloved doctor in Chardon for many years and coached the Chardon Science Olympiad team in herpetology.
Susan had a kind heart for those less fortunate than herself. After leaving Chardon, she practiced In Minnesota in a clinic for people unable to pay for medical care, and again in Akron, with Dr. Bonyo, where she was helping a low-income clientele.
Growing up, summers were spent at the family cottage, where Susan developed a love for nature, a healthy environment and the Grand River.
Everybody who knew Susan as an adult knew about her love for birds. She savored every opportunity for a bird-watching trip and was an active member of local birding communities.
She also enjoyed music and played the piano and guitar.
A Celebration of her life will be held this Saturday, June 8, at 2 p.m., in Geneva. Please contact Sally Sparhawk at sally@sparhawkconsulting.com or 970-618-1442 for more information and directions.
In lieu of flowers, Susan asked for donations to Bonyo’s Kenya Mission (https://bonyoskenyamission.org) or The Cornell Lab of Ornithology (www.birds.cornell.edu).
