Richard Clifford Diedrich, age 88, died Jan. 25 2019, at The Residence of Chardon after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born June 26, 1930, in Chardon, he was the son of the late Clifford Griswold Diedrich and Maurine Alice VanWagoner.

He was a lifelong resident of Northeast Ohio, but had resided in the Geneva/Ashtabula area for over 30 years.

He attended Chardon High School and joined the U.S. Navy, stationed on the aircraft carrier Oriskany.

He was a Korean War veteran and an honored member of the VFW in Geneva, where he served as Sr. Vice Commander and Chaplain. He was also a member of the Volunteer Fire Department in Montville Township.

He was employed by United Parcel Service for over 30 years, receiving the “Safe Driving” award while serving the Ashtabula and Lake Country areas. He loved his job and was always ready to give a smile and friendly “hello” — a real dedicated employee.

Richard enjoyed travels to Las Vegas, Florida, Arizona, New Mexico, North Carolina, New York and Canada. He was truly a carefree spirit who loved life.

Survivors are his sister, Jane Diedrich (Pete) Peterson, of Mooresville, N.C.; brothers George (Judy) Diedrich, of Chardon, and Bob (Gloria) Diedrich, of Hambden Township; children; Lorrie Volz (Scott), Kathy Gingerich (Ray), David Diedrich (Lori), Joseph Diedrich (Wendy); and 15 grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother C. Raymond Diedrich.

He also leaves many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends to cherish his memory.

Special thanks to Seidman Cancer Center of Mentor, The Residence of Chardon (Assisted Living) and The Hospice of the Western Reserve of Mentor.

A private family service will be held, with burial to follow at the Chardon Municipal Cemetery.

A Celebration of his Life will be held at a later date.
