Dorothy Allen, a long-time resident of Middlefield, died Saturday, May 13, 2017, at the Briar Hill Health Care Residence.
Born in 1919 in Twinsburg, Dorothy attended John Adams High School in Cleveland. After graduating, she attended night school at Dyke Spencerian Business College.
She met and married Edgar Allen in 1939. They had one son.
Dorothy worked all of her life. After moving to Middlefield, she worked as a clerk at Middlefield Bank and then as a secretary at the Johnson Rubber Company.
In 1959, she became the principal secretary for the Marotta – Glazer Company, a construction firm. In time, that company morphed into Mr. Coffee and Dorothy was made vice president of sales administration in 1976. She retired in 1989.
After retirement Dorothy volunteered her time to numerous organizations in Middlefield. She was a trustee and the financial secretary of First United Methodist Church for 18 years. During that same span, she served as a housing officer for Middlefield Village, as a trustee of Middlefield Historical Society and as treasurer of Centerstage, and was a member of Kiwanis.
Perhaps her greatest contribution to the community was as treasurer of Friends of the Library. Funds from their sale of used books purchased many things for the library, including the lovely bronze statues at the entrance. She received the Chapman Award for her service in 2014.
She is survived by her son, Bruce Allen; two grandsons, Sean and Mark Allen; and two great-grandchildren, Lucas and Zoe Allen.
Dorothy donated her body to the Case Western Reserve University’s School of Medicine.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Food Cupboard at the First United Methodist Church.
