MIDDLEFIELD – Myrtle B. Carwell, 99, of Middlefield, passed away Nov. 21, 2016, at her home.
She was born on Oct. 1, 1917, in McCoole, Md., daughter of the late Edwin and Mary (nee Bean) Burke.
Myrtle received her bachelor’s degree at the University of Maryland.
She worked with Nobel Prize winners Milton Friedman and William Vickrey at the U.S. Department of the Treasury in Washington D.C. and later taught junior high math in Bay Village.
She and her husband, Richard (Carr), retired to Cayce, S.C., in 1980.
After Richard’s death in 2004, she moved to Middlefield.
She is survived by her children, Susan Bound, David Carwell, Mary Fletcher, Jane Kay and Rebecca Tousey; and 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was a member of the Middlefield Senior Center, where she and her friends played pinochle.
She also enjoyed sewing, reading, and playing canasta.
Per her wishes, a private burial was held at Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens in LaVale, Md. No flowers please.
Donations may be made in her name to the American Diabetes Association.
