CHARDON – Walter Webster “Doc” Sargent, age 97, of Chardon, Ohio, peacefully passed away at his home on July 17, 2022.

He was born on Aug. 8, 1924, to Edwin Taylor and Grace (nee Donley) Sargent in Mantua. His family moved to Chardon, in 1938, where he graduated from Chardon High School in the Class of 1942. (He was proud to have been on the baseball team that made it to the state finals that year.)

He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy as a “Sea Bee” serving during World War II.

Walter married Faye Park in 1946 (she preceded him in death in 2000) and then attended The Ohio State University, graduating with a degree in optometry in 1954.  Doc had his own practice in Willoughby until he retired in 1997 at the age of 73.

Walter was a lifelong active member of the Chardon United Methodist Church, where he had served on most every board or committee. He also had been a charter member of the Willoughby Rotary Club, a Chardon Village councilman for 16 years and a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Indians (Guardians).

A lifelong enjoyment of pitching horseshoes earned him a Gold Medal at the Senior Olympics.

Walter is survived by his wife, Joyce (nee Bican) Hummel, whom he married in 2006; a daughter, Elizabeth (Robert) Emmons, of Chardon; stepchildren, Thomas (Chris) Hummel Jr. and Heidi (Paul) Marks, both of Chardon; grandchildren, Taylor (Becky) Emmons, Rachel (Matthew) Hinder, Thomas (Allyson) Hummel III, Kaitlyn (Chad) Sanders, Emily Hummel, David Marks, Hannah Marks, Jeremy Marks; and four great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Helen (nee Hannah) Sargent; first wife, Faye (nee Park) Sargent; and brother, Warren Sargent.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 6, 2022, at Chardon United Methodist Church, 515 North St., Chardon, where the family will receive friends following the service in Hayden Hall.

A private family interment will be held at Chardon Municipal Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the church.

Arrangements are made by Burr Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chardon. Information and condolences online at www.burrservice.com.
