Joseph George Johnston Sr., age 79, passed away peacefully June 29, 2022, at his home.
He was born in Red Bank, N.J., on Dec. 12, 1942, the son of Joseph and Sara (nee Lytle) Johnston.
Joe was a graduate of Charles F. Brush High School and went to Baldwin Wallace College, where he received his bachelor’s degree in physics, and later a master’s degree.
He married DeAnna Louise Durkin on June 16, 1965.
Joe was an engineer and scientist, highly intelligent with a desire to know as much as he could. He loved technology and learning how things worked. He was an avid piano player, playing for church and at home.
Always the caretaker, he was interested in all his family did and wanted to be a part of it. He was always ready to listen, whether it was how his grandson was doing in school or a complicated problem that needed a solution.
He was a wonderful father, grandfather and brother, adored by all his family.
Survivors include his wife, DeAnna, of Newbury Township; daughter, JoAnna, of Rio Rancho, N.M.; son, Joseph (Jennifer), of Chardon; five grandchildren, Joey, Seth, Caleb, Jonah and Abby; sister, Barbara (Tom, deceased), of Medina; nieces, Maggie (Nick) and Sally (Chris); great-nephews, Tommy, Niko and Luke; and great-niece, Aubrey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Sara.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 6, 2022, from 3-6 p.m., at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon, with funeral services beginning at 6 p.m.
Private graveside service will be held at Newbury Center Cemetery.
