MUNSON TWP. – Jack Alexander Smith Sr., age 83, of Munson Township, passed peacefully at home with loved ones by his side on Sunday, April 17, 2022.

He was born in Bedford to John and Mary Smith (deceased), and spent his youth excelling at his studies.

He was a fun and loving brother to Jim (deceased), Jean, Sally (Gene) and Bill (Becky); and cousin to Diane and Janice (John).

Jack was a veteran of the United States Army, a Math and Science Teacher at Chagrin Falls Middle School and a Student/Teacher of all living things.

He attended Kent State University, John Carroll University, Case Western Reserve, University of Pittsburgh, Penn State University, The Ohio State University and the United Coast Guard Institute.  The number of degrees, certifications and associations was astounding.

Jack belonged to the Ohio Teachers Association, The National Marine Educators Association, The Ohio Alliance for the Environment, The Chagrin Valley Astronomical and Natural Sciences Society, The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and much more. He was recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard with a citation for meritorious service, and Ohio Edison for his excellence in Education.

Jack was one of the first to start the Geauga Beekeepers Association and Geauga Buzzers 4-H club.

There was never a moment when he was not planning or doing something; some of his plans were that of a mad scientist and others were simple but brilliant.

He loved to hike, grow and raise things, and was constantly reading and delving into every subject from planets to fish.

Jack and his wife Shirley raised three children, Kelly (Dale), Kristen and Jack Jr.; as well as being extremely involved with his loving grandchildren, Jon, Brittany (his favorite sidekick!) and Josh. He also is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.

The family would like to extend sincere gratitude to Serenity Hospice. Their exceptional care and support was beyond reproach.

The family will be having a private gathering.

We ask that instead of flowers, donations be made to Serenity  Hospice so they may continue their excellent work as well as the Geauga County Meals on Wheels Program. Our family is forever indebted to these wonderful people.
